Tasting Sibu and Kuching

Be warned! You might get really hungry after reading this post!

I can finally say that I've been to East Malaysia !!! Wootz!! As I was growing up, my parents used to take my siblings and I travelling overseas alot, but we never got the chance to head to the East side of Malaysia. The thing is probably because my parents expected East Malaysia to be the same as West Malaysia in terms of population, landscape, food, etc. Boy, were they wrong..... not only was East Malaysia different in terms of location, but also in food, and previously, time zone(half an hour difference but was changed to be similar during Dr.Mahathir's time as the prime minister)!

Talking about the differences in food, I had a three day endless journey of Sarawak food which consisted alot of noodles..interesting eh?

My first two dishes that I tried was in Kuching at Foodie Goodie restaurant

Kolo mee which us West Malaysians thought "Kon Lo meen aka Wan tan mee"...It was really different because there is no black sauce and it was actually dry and doesn't come with the wan tan(we ordered it thinking it was wan tan mee...LOL)... really not used to it...

Then, we headed to Sibu for my brother's wedding which was a 45 minute flight from Kuching itself and they are in the same state *gasps* Sabah and Sarawak has alot of land!

For the first night, we celebrated my sister in law's father's birthday at a famous restaurant called Sheraton(not the hotel as many would think)

Highlighting a few dishes for you guys to try..

The fried noodles with egg which symbolizes someone's birthday. Yumz!!! The fried noodles which was tangy tasted good with the belacan served..

Second very different dish was akin to the Four seasons we are used to... This is a lobster ship, which means everything that you see on the ship consists of lobsster.. 6 different varieties!

Popular dessert in Sibu is the Yam which is mashed up...Not a fan of yam but it tastes good with gingko

The next morning, we headed to the biggest wet market in Malaysia which was really clean to check out what's in there... more food perhaps?

I found the cutest nasi lemak packets which were wrapped this way..I saw many people eating out of the packet like pulut!

The wet market had an interesting array of stuff from LIVE chicken which was wrapped in newspaper(found that really scary), vegetables, meat, herbs, dry spices, and toys! We of course headed to try out another local resturant after our tour of the wet market...

It's called "collection of noodles" in Chinese(Ding Bian HU) because the batter is mixed into the wok and collected together in the soup as you can see above. Tastes like Pan Mee but softer, fresher and has the tastiest soup ever!

Amongst all the restaurants I've tried in Sibu and Kuching, I loved this restaurant which is called Chop Hing Huong the most because it had a good mixture of different types of food which is more suited to my tastebuds!

The morning before we left, we headed to One cent Restaurant to try the famous Mee Suah as it was my birthday...a local tradition....

8 herbs noodles, the smell and taste of herbs were very strong...may not be a crowd favourite...but some who love herbal soup may just like this:)

Fried Kompia which is the chinese version of Bagels! There's meat or vegetables inside...Very delicious!!!

The mee suah which everyone raves about. It has a bland tasting soup which I don't really fancy with assam laksa type noodles. Me, being ignorant always thought that Mee Suah was sourish and spicy... eeps!

I ate the "long live" noodle version of mee suah to signify my birthday!

There you go guys, a collection of food, mostly noodles which I tried in Sibu and Kuching! After my 3 days journey there, I found the food quite different from West Malaysia and wasn't used to it. I am possibly used to alot of saucey and flavourful food. But like I always say, food is a matter of personal taste, so do try out the popular ones I've highlighted and tell me what you think?
