Unbelievable Penang!!!!

I promise you that this is an unbelievable post not because of the food but in the proccess of food hunting....WHAT I saw amongst the hawkers working in Penang!!!

When locals think of Penang, the first word that comes to our mind is FOOD! Be warned, try not to salivate while reading this...

At the corner of Kimberly street, there is an amazing coffee shop that serves local delicacies for the night owls. Me, of course feeling hungry at about 9.30pm got a friend who was thrilled to be a local tour guide to take us out for dinner, or was it supper? I couldn't remember...EEP! And...in one lil tong sui shop, we could get all of the food below:

Koay Chiap,a mixture of tangy noodles with eggs and intestines(found this part after gobbling it down)

 Famous Char Koay Teow

The opposite, Koay Teow noodle soup which was extremely tasty!

Dessert, two types of tong sui, my favourite is the one with lotus seeds

We couldn't leave for a long time hoping that the rain would abade... But, we were alerted by the restaurant owner to MOVE OUR CAR, THERE'S A FLOOD!!!!!

Ben bracing the flood to move the car...water was ankle deep by that time

This is the amazing part, the hawkers were still frying char koay teow even when the flood was way past ankle deep!!!!! Even cars couldn't cross through by that time but they were diligently working in the flood and rain without stopping

I couldn't believe what I saw! WOW!!!! I wanted to give them a huge hug and say, "you've made my day" because when you think you are hardworking sometimes and hating your job, look at them.... The scene itself is a true sign of hardwork and dedication right there to earn money even when a flood was happening around them! Many people would have closed their stalls at the first sign of rain, what more a FLOOD?

After the "harrowing" flood experience, we headed to a new area called Straits Quay which I was highly impressed with. Penang reminds me of Singapore, it is now so clean and organized! You go Penang!

The concourse area

Many restaurants and bar overlooking the dock for yatchs, *one can only dream of owning one at the moment*

With my trusty friend and tour guide, Nicole:)

Trees were surrounding us while we were chilling at the German Bar

This beer is a MUST to try for those people who love sweet beverages...Like I said, I don't drink but after trying a sip of this, I actually liked it!!! Huge achievement for me ok!

Finally got to come here with Ben who has been raving about Straits Quay

The next night, Nicole brought me to another coffee shop which served the best hokkien mee I have ever tasted!! It's called Old Green House!

This is one bowl of century egg porridge you don't want to miss! I ate the whole bowl!

And the best Hokkien Mee EVER!!!!!!!!!

All the above places were recommended by a local who knows here way around and is proud of Penang. If you do head there, I do suggest you try out these places....and did I mention, the hospitality in Penang is so warm and friendly? After this trip, I'm thinking of retiring there in the future(I know! Too young to think but who knows?!? Maybe I can retire by 40?hehehehe) Food's good, people are nice AND hardworking, clean, etc, what's not to like?

xoxo

how come i experienced a total opposite of what you did?

i hate penang. people. food. the heat. everything.

penang food is too commercialized. in fact i think fga's side hawker stall sells the best fried kuey teow.

the people in pg is so rude. drivers are rude. even the ppl walking around are rude. they speak rudely.

weather is extremely hot. i once fainted cos of food poisoning there! ended up in the hospital.

after tht i did not ever step foot in pg anymore.

so thats why i was wondering what an extremely different pg experience yours was

Lol...hhmm...I think because my friend is a local from Penang..maybe she speaks their lingo and she drove... but when I was there..i actually felt safe..when did you go? Now, they have changed so much!!! As for the drivers part, tehre were some extremely rude ones, but many actually gave way..

Hope you will get a better experience if you do decide to go again..or you can go with me and my local friend:) hehehe

Agree, most are rude in a low caste sort of way even though there is no caste system and when i get to know a person is from there i choose not to do business with these

Anonymous said...

Sorry i don't mean to use the word caste but generally the rudeness here is worse than i've seen in backwater holes of china.

I am absolutely agree with what you said, esp penang people, rude and arrogant! I dun understand why people find penang people friendly?
